Whangārei District Council (WDC) identified the need to develop a strategy for the future provision of indoor and outdoor sports courts. RSL Consultancy worked with a project steering group consisting of representatives from both WDC and Sport Northland. RSL also approached current user groups of both indoor and outdoor courts to understand local participation trends, compared these with national participation data and modelled future indoor and outdoor court participation.

This strategy outlines the current supply of courts and assesses this against current and potential future demand. It concluded that while there are generally sufficient outdoor courts, there is a significant under-supply of indoor courts, inhibiting participation in a number of sport and recreation activities. The Strategy provides a suite of options to enhance the provision of indoor courts and maintain the provision of outdoor courts in the district.
