Project Description
The purpose of this project was to develop a play, active recreation and sport strategy for the Bay of Plenty region. The project covered 6 territorial authority areas, taking a holistic view to supporting physical activity outcomes for communities. The intention was to guide how resources and joint efforts by stakeholders across the Bay of Plenty could be brought together to maximise the assets and opportunities in support of increased physical activity through play, active recreation and sport.
RSL's Role
RSL led delivery of the project, with direction and guidance provided by a regional Project Steering Group. RSL partnered with Sport Bay of Plenty to deliver a series of partner, stakeholder and community engagement. This included online surveys, stakeholder workshops, and interviews with relevant agencies. Sport Bay of Plenty provided insights from direct engagement with different sector groups such as education providers and the regional play forum and existing regional data and insights.
RSL also led data and strategic analysis, consideration of emerging trends and themes, exploration of issues, challenges, opportunties and potential partnership approaches, gap and oversupply anlaysis (facilities and programmes/services), in order to identify key enablers and priority future actions.
Project Outcome
The Strategy brings together a diverse set of partners who, through the power of collaboration, can influence and support more people in the Bay of Plenty to get more active, more often.
The Strategy provides a roadmap to increase levels of physical activity through play, active recreation and sport. It identifies 7 key enablers of physical activity, which are practical areas through which organisations across the Bay of Plenty can influence physical activity outcomes and support the hauora (wellbeing) of whānau and communities.
